God of miracles 4 - "Fig Tree"

I have been reading the book of John this week. In the first chapter there is an amazing incident where the disciple Nathanael is introduced to Jesus. Philip speaks to Natanael (John 1:45 - 46) and tells him “we have found the One...Jesus from Nazareth...” and then Nathanael says “Can anything good come out of nazareth?..”

John 1:47-51 (Amp)

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, See! Here is an Israelite indeed [a true descendant of Jacob], in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor falsehood nor duplicity!

• Jesus takes one look at Nathanael and sees exactly who he is, without being introduced to him. This is an act of supernatural power.

48 Nathanael said to Jesus, How do You know me? [How is it that You know these things about me?] Jesus answered him, Before [ever] Philip called you, when you were still under the fig tree, I saw you.
49 Nathanael answered, Teacher, You are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!

• For Nathanael this supernatural meeting between him and Jesus is enough for him to recognise Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. Jesus is almost surprised in the next verse that it took so little for Nathanael to believe that He is the Son of God.

50 Jesus replied, Because I said to you, I saw you beneath the fig tree, do you believe in and rely on and trust in Me? You shall see greater things than this!
51 Then He said to him, I assure you, most solemnly I tell you all, you shall see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man!

This story is amazing!

We should never believe that our miraculous moment of salvation and rebirth into God’s Kingdom is “as good as it gets”. We should not expect that this is the first and last act of our miraculous journey on earth!

Jesus says that this is just the start of your journey of miracles!

Are we expecting too little of our supernatural God?

Are we so exited to meet Him that we expect nothing more from Him?

Jesus says: “YOU SHALL SEE GREATER THINGS THAN THIS!”

John 14:11

11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me; or else believe Me for the sake of the [very] works themselves. [If you cannot trust Me, at least let these works that I do in My Father’s name convince you.]
